Rethinking Fashion for a Sustainable Future & Reimagining Business Frameworks

An intimate conversation with Award-winning journalist and best-selling author Dana Thomas

On April 24, 2025, the Gromek Institute for Fashion Business at Parsons School of Design welcomed acclaimed journalist and sustainability advocate Dana Thomas for a compelling keynote event: Rethinking Fashion for a Sustainable Future & Reimagining Business Frameworks. Held in front of a packed room of industry leaders, students, and faculty, the evening offered more than just insight - it sparked meaningful dialogue and reflection.

Dana Thomas, whose groundbreaking books and reporting have redefined how the fashion industry confronts climate and labor realities, led a deeply thoughtful and timely conversation on how business can—and must—evolve. With the global climate crisis and increasing consumer consciousness reshaping the fashion landscape, her message could not have arrived at a more urgent moment.

THE CONVERSATION:
With clarity, urgency, and grace, Thomas challenged attendees to rethink the systems that uphold the fashion industry—from the supply chain to marketing models to how success is measured. She explored how sustainability is not a trend, but a business imperative, and laid out a vision where creativity, ethics, and innovation are interwoven into every stage of the fashion lifecycle.

She shared lessons from her reporting across continents, drawing connections between garment workers’ rights, ecological impact, and the influence of consumer behavior. At the core of her talk was a bold call: reimagine business frameworks from the ground up—not just to reduce harm, but to create lasting, regenerative impact.

Key Takeaways:

  • Sustainability as Strategy: Dana emphasized that sustainability is not an add-on or marketing message, but an integrated strategy for long-term viability.

  • Accountability & Transparency: A sustainable fashion system must be honest, traceable, and rooted in respect—for workers, consumers, and the planet.

  • Rewriting the Business Model: She encouraged students to embrace new metrics of success—ones that center equity, regeneration, and community impact over profit alone.

The Audience:
The event brought together a dynamic mix of Parsons students, faculty, and external guests—from emerging designers to corporate sustainability leads. Attendees came from programs such as BFA Fashion, MPS Fashion Management, MA Fashion Studies, BBA Strategic Design and Management, and MFA Design and Technology.

The room was filled to capacity with seated guests, a testament to the demand for conversations that challenge conventional business thinking. Students asked bold questions about the future of fashion education, systemic change, and how young creatives can enter the industry without compromising their values.

A Look Ahead:
The Gromek Institute continues to shape conversations that matter—connecting global thought leaders with the next generation of changemakers. Dana Thomas reminded all in attendance that the future of fashion isn’t something to wait for—it’s something we design, together. Her keynote laid the groundwork for the upcoming Fashion Business Sustainability Symposium, a platform for deeper exploration and action.
